X10 Wireless XCam2 Front Cameras

Abstract - Inspired by the dangers of driving with the left hand and video taping with the right hand.

Purchase - Bought 2nd Hand from E46Fanatic member.

Parts - XCam2 wireless cameras, wireless A/V receivers, power supplies.

Installation - I have never seen a DIY write up on this particular mod yet, so I basically just invented this process as I went along. When I designed my mount for my Philips Xenon Fog Retrofit, I kept in mind that it would be the best place to add cameras since the fog lights could be used as a light source at night. For this reason, I included a standard size camera mount screw on my custom module. The XCam2 perfectly fits the mount screw and is basically tucked behind the bumper. Next, I had to worry about getting power to the cameras. The XCam2 takes in 12V which is easily taken from the fog light feed. I spliced, twisted, soldered, and applied electrical tape to the connection. Finally, I tightened the screws that held the position of the camera and that was it, done!

Impressions - These XCam2's are not anywhere near great quality. The cameras were cheap to begin with so don't be expecting digital video quality. One major consideration was that these cameras were wireless. It saved me a lot of time not having to hardware video cables through the firewall, etc. Another problem was that these cameras were rated weather resistant and not waterproof. Basically, weather resistant means it can be outdoors but it needs to be covered well. By tucking the whole camera base behind the bumper and only exposing the lens, it will be very hard for water to reach the sensitive electronics. Currently, I am using two small LCD screens in my console to view what is going on the cameras. The results were better than I had anticipated. The cameras are mounted low and close to the ground so the speed of the car seems to go very fast. It looks just like one of those professional racing videos minus the professional driver and car, heh.

Conclusions - This mod is more of a random gadget than anything really useful. Some people suggested that adding a video capture card or a Sony TIVO would prove to be useful. That is something to definitely think about for the future.
