Racing Dynamics Trunk Wing
Abstract -
Getting a trunk spoiler has always
been a debate for the E46. The E46 looks pretty good without a spoiler, but
some also say that it lacks an end. There are many types of trunk wings some
aggressive some subtle. I personally like a more aggressive wing. Conviently,
my girlfriend bought me this Racing Dynamics Trunk Wing for my birthday!
Purchase - Bought
new from SOMEWHERE
Parts - BMW P/N:
63-17-2-228-613
- M3 Fog Light Right(CHECK)
Installations
- The package did included the wing primed and ready for paint, bolts, and
detailed instructions. With most body
pieces, make sure you have a good body shop. A bad body shop will yield very
bad results. I had my trunk wing painted at Ricks Auto
Collision. I was not there at the time of the installation but they explained
to their procedure. Since the
trunk wing was already primed all they needed to do was sand, prime, paint, and
clear coat. If this procedure isn't followed, the paint will have a hard time
sticking, the final product will be bumpy and not smooth, the paint will chip
easily, etc.
Also, be
sure to read all the instructions. This particular wing can not be baked, the
paint will lift and there will be problems. We had to paint it about 4 times
before getting it perfect. For some reason the material Racing Dynamics used
is very sensitive to heat.
The trunk
bolt locations do not line up flush against the rear of the trunk how the OEM
Aero Kit does. It is about 1 inch in front of the rear of the trunk. At first
I thought this would be weird, but it actually flows with the lines of the E46
very well.
Impressions - The Racing Dynamics Trunk Spoiler turned
out exactly how I thought it would be. It took sometime to grow on me, but now
stock E46's look like they are missing something. I also installed the Hamann
Roof Spoiler LINK around the same time I did the trunk spoiler. I found out
that they look really good together. I would either get both the trunk wing
and roof spoiler or neither.
Conclusions - If you feel like you want to add an
aggressive tone to the rear of the E46, go for a trunk wing. If you want a
more subtle tone, get a M3 lip spoiler or an AC Schnitzer type spoiler.
